I have a funny relationship with ageing. The older I get, the more self-assured I assume I’m going to magically become. In truth though, it’s gotten harder to ignore insinuations to not buy the neon dress that the shop owner thinks is too ‘girly’ for you, and to move on to a slightly more womanly one. It also gets harder to digest that the average Instagram influencer is all of 16-years-old, and that I’m no longer the youngest copy editor in the Vogue office. But with each passing day, I’m beginning to see that age truly is just a number—the more years you rack up, the more life experiences you learn from, the more fabulous outfits you collect, and the less you care about what someone else thinks of you. The only opinion that matters is your own, and you can do what you want, when you want, and always wear exactly what you want. From the likes of entertainers like JLo, Jennifer Aniston and Madhuri Dixit, who’ve sustained long careers and look great doing it, to icons like artist Yayoi Kusama and model Carmen Dell’Orefice, our world is full of timeless icons. If you’re looking for inspiration, read on.

Diane Keaton

The 73-year old multi-award winner who became a mum at the age of 50 has been an inspiration since she made her foray into films. Today she’s getting closer to her fans via tongue-in-cheek, all-caps Instagram captions, fun #OOTDs and a heavy dose of humour.

Maye Musk

Canadian-South African model and dietitian and the mother of Elon Musk (Kimbal Musk, and Tosca Musk), the silver haired beauty has been a model for 50 years, and in 2017 she became CoverGirl’s oldest spokesmodel at 69!

Rekha

Child actor, Rajya Sabha MP, accomplished actor and style icon, the 65-year-old Padma Shri awardee is known to constantly reinvent herself and provides timeless inspiration through her distinct sartorial choices.

Jane Fonda

The 81-year-old American actor, writer, producer, political activist, fitness guru, and former fashion model currently stars as one half of award-winning Netflix original series Grace and Frankie and is the poster child for having a long, sustained, successful career. Not to mention, a fearless champion of women and of living unapologetically!

Iris Apfel

In 2018, Mattel created a Barbie doll in Apfel’s image, making her the oldest person to ever have a Barbie modelled after her. In 2019, at the age of 97, she signed a modelling contract with global agency IMG—and we can’t wait to see what the 97-year-old fashion icon, businesswoman and interior designer, does next.

Linda Rodin

Stylist, accidental beauty entrepreneur (at 59), and founder of Linda and Winks, a lifestyle brand for dogs and their caretakers—the silver-haired beauty and fashion icon is a trailblazer and great example of never letting age come in the way of making career strides and starting all over.

Daphne Selfe

Selfe began modelling in 1949, and at the age of 70 was photographed by Vogue—today, she’s spreading her wisdom and zest for life through The Daphne Selfe Academy (founded in 2015) to inspire women of all ages.
