Bollywood might be the butt of jokes when it comes to how over-the-top the industry’s treatment of set decor, costumes, and even makeup might be, but it’s also the perfect place to find inspiration for all things extra. Among them, are all things wedding-related, even beauty looks. So, if you love “Kareena ka pink lehenga” for your big day, but are yet to zero in on a makeup look, here are the best bridal makeup moments from Bollywood movies for some inspiration.
1. Aishwarya Rai as Paro in Devdas
While Bengalis everywhere cringed at the stereotypical portrayal of our community in Devdas, Aishwarya Rai was a vision in big bindis and sweeping winged liner. For the wedding look, her face was adorned with traditional red and white dots, which used to be made of sandalwood paste, and are meant to frame the brow bone. Aishwarya’s thick eyeliner made her iconic eyes look even prettier, while the thin but strong brow arches added more sexiness to this already-stunning look. The regrettable brick lipstick with metallic gold sheen was the only downer, but Ash being the woman she is, even pulled that off!
2. Anushka Sharma as Alizeh in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
Playing Alizeh, a Muslim bride from Lucknow, Anushka was traditionally done up with loads of smokey kohl, fluttery lashes, and a paasa to frame her curls. Keeping it pretty and understated, her pinky-nude lipstick and lit-from-within skin allowed the smouldering eye makeup do all the talking. If you aren’t a fan of bold lips but still want to make a dramatic statement with your wedding makeup, smokey black eye shadow such as hers is the perfect way to take something traditional like kajal, and upgrade it to something glamourous and doll-like.
3. Sonam Kapoor as Dolly in Dolly Ki Doli
A departure from the red lips, neutral glam, or black smokey eyes that every bride does, this silvery-green halo eye took us by surprise in the best way. Pairing her warm brownish-nude lipstick and bronzed, sculpted face with contrasting shades of pastel green on the eyes, she was a lesson in colour theory. For her eyes, she had a black transition shade to smoke out her crease and outer corners, and the centre of her lids was filled in with a metallic greyish-green shade to match the pastel green and silver bridal outfit she was wearing.
4. Preity Zinta as Zaara in Veer-Zaara
Preity Zinta’s beautiful eyes looked like a work of art in this entire film, and during the scene when she gets engaged, they appeared even more divine. Artfully smoked-out black kajal, diffused into brown eyeshadow helped prevent the look from seeming graphic, while wispy and separated long falsies gave her the bright-eyed look she’s famous for. Matte but not flat, her skin was radiant and flawless, allowing the lustrous sheen of her pink glossy lips to, quite literally, shine. Sensuous and feminine, it was definitely a memorable beauty look.
5. Katrina Kaif as Jia in Humko Deewana Kar Gaye
Katrina’s pink-toned makeup here made her look stunning. Wearing frosty lilac-pink shadow on the lids in keeping with the trends of the early aughts, she also wore heaps of pink lip gloss and pink blush to complete the look. Thick lashes and lots of kajal helped make the look more bridal, as did the red bindi, which was a unique touch, since Katrina is rarely seen in that avatar. Pretty and demure, this was definitely a heavier look than what we see on Katrina, but in the best way possible. Perfect for a winter wedding, this cool-toned pink makeup look is great for brides wearing silver, pink, lavender, purple, or white at their wedding.
6. Anushka Sharma as Aarfa in Sultan
Playing yet another stunning Muslim bride, Anushka switched from kohl to a rich lip here to go with her sparkly, champagne-coloured outfit. Pairing her brown smokey eyes with an unusual pink berry stain, Anushka’s choice of lipcolour helped freshen up her look and made her colour pop beautifully. Not graphic like a pink or red, but also not boring like a nude, this colour looked sweet and natural–perfect for a bride!
7. Madhuri Dixit as Nisha in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!
Everyone was so busy obsessing over Madhuri’s purple saree from this movie that they forgot to acknowledge the beauty of her makeup in the wedding scene. The eyes were the highlight of the look. A warm crease, tightlined smokey pencil liner on the upper lash line, and the most wispy, separated falsies made it subtle and made the lashes appear fluttery. Adding to the doll-like vibe was white liner in her lower waterline, which opened up the eyes. A hint of brown liner framed the lower lashline to make the eyes look bright and open. Madhuri’s brows were impeccably filled-in and groomed, and her beautifully filled-in lips featured a coat of light-red, my-lips-but-better gloss.
8. Kangana Ranaut as Tanu in Tanu Weds Manu
There’s little that Kangana hasn’t experimented with in terms of makeup or fashion. This rich red lip is pretty bold, given that it was paired with a loud green lehenga. She paired it with well-curled lashes, a small bindi, and thin caterpillar brows. Letting the creamy red lipstick do the talking next to porcelain skin, Kangana proved that sometimes, less is more.
