Your jewellery shows your character: UP cop tells girl trying to register harassment complaint, suspended
A cop in Uttar Pradesh was suspended on Thursday after a video of him shaming a girl over her jewellery went viral. The video, which was also shared by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, shows the cop chiding the girl for wearing rings, locket and bracelets, while she is trying to register an eve-teasing complaint against three men.
In the video, the girl is heard saying that a guy named Amar Tiwari misbehaved with her. She also accused Amar Tiwari and his two friends, Aashiq and Vicky Langra, of beating up her brother when he objected to their advances towards her.
The cop can then be seen questioning the girl on why she wears so much jewellery.
“Yeh angoothi tum kahe pehn rahi ho? Yeh chuda kis liye pehn rahi ho? Yeh kyun dal rahi ho gale mein? Yeh itne item tum kisliye daal rahi ho? Kuchh labh hain inse tumhe? (Why are your wearing these rings, necklace and bracelets? What purpose do they serve?),” the police official is seen asking the girl.
“Isi se dikhayi de jata hai ki tum kya ho (this shows your character),” he added.
The policeman went on to chide the girl’s parents for not minding the way she dresses even as her father argued that the boys who harassed his daughter had a history of such acts. The incident took place in Nazirabad police station in Kanpur.
Sharing the video, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “A girl who had gone to register an eve-teasing complaint was mistreated at the police station. On one hand, there is no decline in crimes against women in Uttar Pradesh and on the other hand, those who are meant to protect the law behave in this manner. The first step to getting justice for women is to hear them out,” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Twitter.
According to news agency ANI, the policeman in the video was first sent to the district line and then suspended, pending inquiry.
